Annual Gala 2009
Honoring Douglas Turner Ward
On March 30, 2009, Signature hosted its Annual Gala at Espace, an elegant venue located at 635 West 42nd Street. Signature was thrilled to honor Douglas Turner Ward, award-winning playwright, actor, director, and Founding Artistic Director of the Negro Ensemble Company. It was a truly memorable and historic night, with artists, family, and friends from around the country gathering to pay tribute to Doug and his many accomplishments.
The event was hosted by NEC alumni Ruben Santiago-Hudson and Phylicia Rashad, and featured presentations from artists involved in Signature's current historic Negro Ensemble Company Season. The presence of NEC co-founders Robert Hooks and Gerald Krone as well as original Company members made the night especially poignant.
Additionally, former Signature Playwrights-in-Residence Edward Albee, John Guare, Romulus Linney, Chuck Mee, and Lanford Wilson welcomed Ward to the family and presented a moving tribute to Horton Foote, on of Signature's most cherished friends and collaborators.
The night also consisted of a live auction, which featured a variety of fantastic packages for people of all interests and ages. Participants also had the chance to sponsor a community outreach performance of Zooman and the Sign and support Signature's Internship Program. The auction was led by Lydia Fenet, a professional Christie's auctioneer.
Signature was also honored to present the fourth annual Playwrights' Award to American Express, whose incredible championship of the 2008/09 historic Negro Ensemble Company Season has enabled a new generation to understand the legacy and impact of this legendary company.
